Some audio stuff:

http://foobar2000.org - free audio player / ripper / converter. For Windows only.

SoX Sound exchange (http://sox.sourceforge.net/) is a very capable sound converter. Command line only interface is powerful but a bit daunting at first. Gives nice results, available for various operating systems.

After upgrading to Windows 7 I was unable to view some image thumbnails in Windows Explorer. The Nvidia dds viewer did not work for me. I found Sage Thumbs (for free) which will view DDS, AI, EPS and many more formats. Works for Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7 32/64-bit.

Great! Keep it up, folks!

Here's some new ones I've found...
Format Factory - great video converter, I use this now instead of SuperC
Handbrake - DVD ripper
MPEG Streamclip - video converter
Sandboxie - allows executables (like your browser) to run in a "sandbox" so it cannot write to your drive, modify your registry or other nasty things
Eraser- secure delete tool for Windows
CopyTrans Control Center - replaces Apple bloatware for Ipod (some elements you have to pay for)
KompoZer- web authoring

From Autodesk,
123D Catch: takes multiple photos and stitches them into a mesh.

123D Make: helps build realworld objects from 3d design.

there is also sketch and design (but I haven't looked into them at all)

Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages.

Great for editing XML files.

I've done this every few years, because I think its good you get the most out of your PC. 95% of the programs on my PC are freeware. There are a few that I have purchased, but most stuff is free, and better than a lot of the purchased products. Here's a list of my faves...

Firefox: browser http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
Thunderbird: email program http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
Irfanview: graphics (excellent to use for quick photo viewing) http://www.irfanview.com/

SuperC: excellent video/sound converter, does all formats http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
VideoLAN (VLC): replacement for Windows Media Player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
FileZilla: ftp client (also server available) http://filezilla-project.org/
Networx: bandwidth usage/speed monitor http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/
Universal Extractor: extracts files from zips, rars, isos even installer exe files http://legroom.net/software/uniextract
Process Explorer: excellent tool shows (and kills) any process within windows, dll threads, etc http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96653.aspx
TCPView: tells you what active network connections are on your machine http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 97437.aspx
Autoruns: tells you (and lets you stop) things that start up when the computer boots http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 63902.aspx
