I have owned various versions of 3DSimmED going back years and years and years - always kept it updated... so figured I may as well learn how to use it now :)

Is it possible to use 3DSimED to create a skin template for a loaded model?

I guess I am trying to understand how, if possible I can project the 3D mesh onto a loaded texture and then save it, so I know where to paint in the DDS file.

This is for an Assetto Corsa car, although I am guessing this process does not matter for the type of model.

Thanks

Paul

Add to this a general frustration with not being able to do simple tasks in the program.

Is there some kind of UI tutorial for 3DSimED?

How to center an imported object to 0,0,0?

How to correctly import objects into files and then be able to assign all attributes?

How to duplicate an object and then be able to assign new name/instance and have it stick?

How to change assign materials for objects already in the map/track.

I made a KN5 track for AC. The track was built using Race Track Builder. It works well. So I imported the KN5 into 3DSimED to try do various manual tasks - and boy is it a hairpulling exercise.

Sometimes changing an attribute works when exporting, other times not. Sometimes the FBX of this track exported opens in KSEditor, sometimes not.

So first a tutorial of how and what all the tools in 3DSimED are and do would be useful. Especially in the context of AC.

I am willing to read an learn, but need to find the resources to do so first.

Well - after an all night 3DSimED binge sessions I managed to turn the corner :)

I can now manipulate incoming objects and get them placed, understand some of the nuances a bit better - still not sure what all the tools do but am more comfy with the UI now - just to try figure out the texture mesh marking thing :)

Hello - back for more :)

Just to report that I now have a smooth working rhythm in 3DSimED - I guess I just needed to serve my apprenticeship and "suffer through the early days" like every one else :)

Still need to figure this texture mapping thing out though.

2 Weeks later and I am 100% at home with 3DSimEd - thanks Dave for a great application.

Any chance it will go 64bit to get past the 3.4GB memory limit?

While working with a very populated map, 3DSimEd file size about 600mb I notice it only takes 2 or 3 copy/paste actions to go from 1.2GB memory use in the app to surpass the 3.4GB mark and get the dreaded Out of Memory error when trying to save.

Is the entire data set being placed in the clipboard to allow for Undo operations?

Yes, the Edit->Copy function will copy all geometry and materials into 3DSimED's internal clipboard, and with a large drawing you will also soon have a large undo stack, so it does not take long to run out of memory.
A 64-bit version would help but large drawings really slow the program down so there needs to be some big internal work to counter that downside.

Cheers!
