Having only PCI-e myself this is something I've looked into. FWIR it depends on the card. IIRC there weren't many cards that took advantage of the full bandwidth of PCI-e x16 (2.0) at the time, and thus should have enough bandwidth on 1.0 x16 to not bottleneck. I think I looked at this early in the life of pci-e 2.0. (2007-8?)

More info:

Quote:
PCIe 2.0 motherboard slots are fully backward compatible with PCIe v1.x cards. PCIe 2.0 cards are also generally backward compatible with PCIe 1.x motherboards, using the available bandwidth of PCI Express 1.1. Overall, graphic cards or motherboards designed for v2.0 will be able to work with the other being v1.1 or v1.0.

With my old comp I had a 2.0 card with 0 issues. I think they are all backwards compatible. Granted I only looked at ATI cards, so cant say much for other brands.

Q: Is PCIe 2.0 backward compatible with PCIe 1.1 and 1.0?
A: Yes. The PCIe Base 2.0 specification supports both the 2.5GT/s and 5GT/s signaling technologies. A device designed to the PCIe Base 2.0 specification may support 2.5GT/s, 5GT/s or both. However, a device designed to operate specifically at 5GT/s must also support 2.5GT/s signaling. The PCIe Base specification covers chip-to-chip topologies on the system board. For I/O extensibility across PCIe connectors, the Card Electromechanical (CEM) and ExpressModule™ specifications will also need to be updated, but this work will not impact mechanical compatibility of the slots, cards or modules.

I don't know what you're in the market for, but I picked this up earlier this year. It was an upgrade from my 260 class card. I'm happy with it.

thanks, bud.

but I don't play these games anymore anyway, and I just need a card for the machine. That sucker would run iR. At best, I run N2k3 occasionally to make LP files for someone, so I need something that will run 2k3.

that sucker would run 2k3 twice......... LOL

are you crushed, Traveller, that the shuttle is gone? I didn't realize it started so long ago. The St. Pete paper made the point that there is a whole generation that knows nothing else...... hard to fathom, for us old farts. I watched Shepard just go up like a firework and fall back....... LOL
