Hi folks,

I'm taking a shot in the dark here.

I have two old 686 machines that I've put back online with Voodoo 5500 gfx cards, Win98, etc. (dang, it wasn't easy finding IDE cables that would wrap all the way around those big cards!!). I backed up a ton of N3 stuff on CDs years ago; cars/trucks, add-on tracks, etc. I have over 100 add-on tracks (short, speedway, road) in folders and can use the old tracktoy batch file to swap them out. But, in a massively bonehead move, I apparently did not save my all.cal file where all these tracks were listed.

Does anyone have their old N3 stuff backed up and might have some big all.cal files, or even some season calendars where you may have run add-on tracks?

I'm retired now and have time to start typing, but that is an undertaking I do not look forward to. Any help would be appreciated.

************
oh yeah........ and btw - one of these W98 machines was my 2k3 sandbox machine (sandbox liked W98 a lot better), so I had 2k3 installed on it to make it easier to grab and open tracks for parts, but I had a G-force 4200 gfx card in it. Now, this V5 may have 64 megs of memory, but I fired up 2k3 just to see what it did............ it took forever to load the track, and sitting in pits, I was getting a whopping 2.76 fps!!

Me Lord, many thanks for your efforts. But I seek add-on tracks, not NASCAR tracks. Another kind soul did provide me with quite a list to meet my needs. While not complete to my track list, it will greatly reduce the typing required.

For those who care:

Its been a long slow journey; sometimes I worked on the machines a few hours a day, sometimes an hour a week. I'd forgotten how manual it was to install stuff in Win98; not straight plug and play, for sure.

Its been a bit more expensive than I anticipated (looking at maybe $250 tops to get both up to speed), but I've now got them up and running, each on their own computer stands. Now I just need to figure out the connections to get them to talk to each other.

To that end, does anyone remember how to do IPX? Its something about null modem cables connected to serial/com ports, but you are limited to 9600 baud rates (i.e. early modem speeds), which I guess would be OK for 2 people.

Apparently, I can also do crossover ethernet cables (both machines have network cards). I think this is what I want to do.

I could connect them to the internet; a router is close by. But that would mean running cable across the room to the router when we wanted to play against each other. But then I could use a 3rd party internet server like Kali (yes, it still exists!!!) to race on. But I don't really need that.

Suggestions appreciated.

I hooked up two machines via a null modem cable so I could play GPL with my brother. This was back around 2000. I remember having to set up one computer as the server and the other as the client. That's about the extent my memory.

I've never used cross over network cables. I've used switches or routers. The switch was in the early 2000's as well. I have it stored in a box somewhere in the house.

Traveller,

Thanks for the feedback, old friend. Its great to see old names still here. :nana: Obviously, I walked away from these games quite a while ago as real life just got in the way of my "play time" as I climbed the "corporate ladder". Retirement is a wonderful thing; its a shame we spend 40 years of our adult life getting there.

Based on searches, it appears I can still get cross over cables; not sure about null modem cables. Even the mom-and-pop shops I've been visiting are shaking their heads at me when I ask for 12 inch IDE cables, etc. Switches and hubs may be hard to find as well, although I have not looked.

My goal is to get N3, NL, DTR(2?), and maybe Grand Prix Racing (maybe v2? .. I had v3 on my XP machine; not sure I ever loaded v4) running, as well as some space games like Descent and Star Wars Racing.

Geez, I loaded CART......... its max res was 640X480....... OMG it was ugly!! And yes, I know there is no reason to load SODA, SCGT, Hooters Cup, or any of those other games that threw everything to the CPU.

I have N2k3 and GPL on my XP machine (yes, my primary is still an XP tower that I built in 2007). I don't want to take GPL back to the W98 machines (I had it on my old one) because you have to make sure you have those special tree files that work in Glide.

Ethernet hub. That's what I used back in the day. Not a switch. I came across it today while looking for my digital multi-meter. I found it, too.

I'm planning on installing GPL next year on my Windows 10 machine for the twentieth anniversary of the release. Yes, I still have the original CD. I also have CD's and DVD's of third party GPL stuff over the years. It will be interesting to see if I can get it to work.

I see we've had a visitor........

After a few PEBCAK* issues while setting up the "network", I have the 2 computers talking to each other, and seeing shared folders, and seeing a "host" for online racing between them. Just used a cross over cable. Latency is 0.03. LOL

Now, I just need to start moving files (cars, tracks, etc) from the old established computer to the clean install one.

Traveller: as to GPL, I have several copies of the CD, a bunch of tracks and carsets, a TON of files created by Draftdancer to enhance cars (I just need to find them), and numerous applications (GEM, GPLaim, GPLglance, GPLSA, etc), on CD. I think the carset I settled on was a mid-range modification (jfcars67?); I liked it, and didn't go any higher (Steve Banks did a movie of the changes including tracks in the early 2000s - it was called Evolution. I have a hi-res AVI but I think its on youtube now). Its on our old nr2k3 tracks server: http://nr2k3tracks.com/hold/evolution.avi (this link won't open in Firefox for me, have to save as...)

If you need something, let me know.
